Welcome to the ‘world shop’ movement on your doorstep
You can be assured of a friendly greeting and a warm welcome when you enter your local health food store along with the best product advice delivered with knowledge and empathy. However, there is a wider aspect to health stores that can be traced back to our roots in the ‘world shop’ movement of the last 100 years.
Campaigning and supporting global and community causes has always been a key part of the independent health food sector. Whether it’s Fair Trade, organic and GMO-free food production or global environmental issues, our sector have been leading advocates. Visiting your local health store will usually open up a window to much of what is happening in your local community and the busy ‘community notice board’ is a fixture in most shops.
Many of the brands that we carry give generous charity donations from their sales and brands – Viridian, A.Vogel, Natures Plus, Irish Seed Savers, Brown Envelope and Macánta Nutrition have strong charitable and ecological mission statements. Health Stores Ireland Select endorsed products will be aiming to increase these ranges in our shops and you can expect many more brands filling our shelves that meet a high expectation in ethics and sustainability.
Meat Free Monday is a very worthwhile project and one which helps to address the equally worrying trends of unsustainable farming and over-consumption of processed meats. Here’s a tip – try making a simple veggie hot pot on Sunday with a base of chopped tomatoes, garlic and onion. Use your favourite herbs, spices and seasonings. You can use dried beans and lentils soaked in unsalted water for a few hours or convenient ready-to-use cans. Make much more than you need and freeze it in portions that you will use again. You will be very pleasantly surprised how convenient and tasty these dishes can be and how satisfying Sunday cooking is for the soul.
We are getting ready for cool breezy autumn days and with the shrinking daylight comes the need to send out the reminder for your vitamin D regime to start or receive a seasonal boost. We have been saying it for years and thankfully now the establishment supported health advisors agree – take a vitamin D supplement! There are a wide range of options, from convenient sprays to family-friendly mini-pearls.
As with most natural health choices, your local health shop will have the widest range of options available and always the best value.
